The Arctic and Antarctica
Client: Weldon Owen
These maps, produced for a children's book, utilise illustrative symbols to emphasise the importance of these regions as both wildlife havens and, in the case of the Arctic, the location of large mineral reserves.
The colours used on this map have been chosen to reflect the extreme temperatures found in these regions. The spread of the snow and winter pack-ice has been shown at its fullest extent to further emphasise the severity of the climate in these areas.
The use of pictorial symbols, as demonstrated on these maps, is a tried and trusted method of engaging the younger reader in a way that traditional abstract symbols are unable to.
Data from the following sources were used in the compilation of this map: Blue Marble: Next Generation: NASA's Earth Observatory; ETOPO2: National Geophysical Data Center; VMAP0: NIMA.
