A map of Mid-Argyll highlighting cycling routes in the region.

Cycling UK - Mid-Argyll Bothy Cycling Map

Merritt Cartographic was commissioned by Cycling UK to create this promotional map and leaflet highlighting their recommended cycling routes through the Mid-Argyll region of Scotland.

Working with colleagues at the Ardrishaig Bothy (a collaboration between Cycling UK and Scottish Canals), Merritt Cartographic produced this document for those looking to explore the area by bicycle. Using a clean and relatively simple map design, which highlights the region's topography, it is hoped that this map and leaflet will incentivise more people visiting the region to explore the area on two wheels by promoting cycle-friendly routes and facilities. However, this map isn't just for tourists, the staff and volunteers at the Ardrishaig Bothy are keen to promote cycling amongst their local community. Another of the aims of this leaflet was to inspire local people to leave their cars at home and make some of their everyday and/or leisure journeys by bike too.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture floor plans produced by Merritt Cartographic.

National Museum of African American History & Culture - floor plans

Merritt Cartographic has produced a series of graphics for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. This is a new museum, opened in 2016, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. These plans were produced for a guidebook of the museum and help readers to navigate across eight floors of public galleries.

These graphics have been created with reference to accurate architectural plans and are drawn to scale. It was decided that a few key 'landmark' objects and displays should be visualised with small yet detailed illustrations. This provides guidebook readers and visitors to the museum with reference points as they travel around the building. Pictorial icons have also been included to identify public facilities and access points.

Merritt Cartographic produces detailed graphics and illustrations for a full range of applications and purposes.

World political and world satellite wall maps.

World Wall Maps

Merritt Cartographic has produced a series of maps for start-up company TURISTO map, for their wall display mapping products. We are the cartographers behind TURISTO map's new 'pin your memories' maps, having been commissioned to create the cartography for these products.

These are amongst the largest and most detailed maps Merritt Cartographic has created, with over 3000 settlements included, over 100 places to visit and 200 national parks. Merritt Cartographic worked with TURISTO map to create designs to fit their brief and the need to produce maps suitable for travellers and adventure seekers.

We produced maps in two different formats for this project, a world political map and a world satellite map. We've used 3D rendering software to add depth to the world's topography and bathymetry alongside a modern typeface to create these contemporary map designs. Please get in touch if you need similar detailed world maps for your project and we will do our best to help you fulfil your mapping brief.

Ancient Egypt Map

NACIS Atlas of Design

Ancient Egypt - Sites and Settlements of the Dynastic Period, is included in the 2nd edition of the North American Cartographic Information Society's (NACIS) Atlas of Design. This edition is, according to the publisher, "dedicated to showing off some of the world's most beautiful and intriguing cartographic design."

I was delighted, therefore, that this map, along with a short commentary describing the design process, was considered worthy of inclusion amongst a collection of 32 maps from contributors located around the world. Many of these maps have been produced by cartographers whose previous work and knowledge has provided me with a great deal of inspiration to further develop my own abilities.

This map details the key settlements of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. Also shown are many of the important Ancient Egyptian sites and temples that remain today. The various capitals are highlighted on the map in addition to the locations of the natural resources and minerals exploited by the Ancient Egyptians.

The Atlas of Design can be purchased here.

Ancient Egypt - Sites and Settlements of the Dynastic Period is available in poster form and can be purchased in our shop.

A map of Great Britain highlighting the locations of Best Western® hotels.

Best Western® Hotels & Resorts

Merritt Cartographic has produced two maps for Best Western® Hotels & Resorts - Great Britain for use in a recent promotional brochure. These maps highlight the locations of all the Best Western® hotels in Great Britain.

Best Western® had been using previous versions of these maps (produced by a different supplier) in their brochures for several years. However, as their brand guidelines had changed over time and their roster of hotels had grown since the earlier maps were created, they needed a series of updated maps for use in their latest brochure. Merritt Cartographic was asked to create a new, visually appealing, design for these maps, which maintained this company's corporate identity.

About

Hello, my name is Ed Merritt. I am a cartographer based in Southampton (UK). I established Merritt Cartographic in 2006.

I am a graduate of Oxford Brookes University, receiving an honours degree in Mapping and Cartography. Having worked in the past for a large publishing company in central London, much of my current work is commissioned for inclusion in reference books. I also produce interactive maps for deployment on websites and in applications as well as products for use on public display panels and signposts. As a freelance cartographer, I have produced custom maps and graphics for a wide range of publishers, charities, media organisations and businesses. My work has been included in books published by Dorling Kindersley, National Geographic, Pearson, Penguin Books, Oxford University Press, Taschen, Laurence King Publishing, Millennium House and Weldon Owen. I've also created maps for a wide range of other companies and charities, including the Royal Horticultural Society, Smithsonian Institution, Best Western, The Greenbrier Companies, Fastmarkets, Bright Horizons and Cycling UK.

I enjoy being creative in my work and like to explore new approaches. As a map-maker, I have a natural tendency to pay attention to detail and also to work hard to ensure that I am being as accurate as I can in the work that I produce.
